(More On Resistance Cont 1)
Some Reasons People Resist Change (4)
i) fear and low tolerance (as change creates uncertainty, people can be very nervous and fearful about change, ie
"...they fear that they won't have the time to develop the new skills and behaviours required of them, which leads to insecurity..."
Nathan Altadonna, 2023
This can lead to the fear of appearing incompetent. Additionally,
"...adjustments could lead to a loss of some relationships and activities, and an establishment of others......if a person's tolerance for change is low, they might begin to actively resist the change for reasons they don't even understand, and these are the reasons often rooted in the fear of failure..."
Nathan Altadonna, 2023
ii) self-interest (sometimes change is perceived as a change in status quo, which can mean loss of, eg power, influence, job, position, status, etc; the start of a continual change process, ie more change coming which can be seen as a threat;
"...they will push back on any effort that they perceive as a potential threat to the current situation..."
Nathan Altadonna, 2023)
iii) lack of trust (if there is already a lack of trust between management and staff, the chance of resistance occurring is high; need to build relationships that will develop trust
"...Without trust, misunderstandings develop, and employees are less likely to 'buy in' to essential changes. Managers need to quickly clear up any misconceptions so that resistance does not build and deepen across the organisation..."
Nathan Altadonna, 2023)
iv) poor communications (the way change is communicated determines how staff will react; resistance will occur
"...If a manager cannot describe the process of exactly what needs to be changed, how the change will be implemented, and how the change will improve things..."
Nathan Altadonna, 2023
