(Natural Human Instinct or Behaviour (9) cont. 3)
Emotions, Classifying and Loss Aversion
The first 3 natural behaviours (emotions, classifying and loss aversion) demonstrate how we process information to make sense of the world; it is emotionally dominated in classifying information: if any doubt we tend to err on the negative to protect ourselves from harm.
These 3 have a powerful impact on forming the first, instant impression; to best handle them, you need to look at how you can influence the initial classifying moment by:
- understanding concern about potential losses (these are generally more about perceptions rather than reality; discussions that will dominate the gossip grapevine; make a list and ask relevant stakeholders to check and add if required; prioritise the list of concerns.)
- considering whether to remove or diminish the main loss concerns (ideally removing the strong emotions that are attached to these concerns; initially start working on the bigger, most important concerns; try to deal with facts rather than perceptions.)
Using mass communications, like e-mails, etc, so that everyone sees the information at the same time, can result in a negative first impression by those impacted. This can panic people unnecessarily and increase the need for repair and recovery modes.
