Resilience
Summary
People react to events in different ways, ie some people become overwhelmed by everyday hassles while others react positively to the most challenging circumstances and life's negative experiences.
Resilience can be described
"...a dynamic process encompassing positive adaptation within the context of significant adversity..."
S. Luthur et al as quoted by PositivePsychology, 2020
In other words
"... A resilient person can quickly bounced back from adversity and positively adapt to the novel demands of the situation..."
J. Block et al as quoted by PositivePsychology, 2020
It can be regarded both personality traits and a process. As a personality trait people differ in their ability to handle adversity; however, it can be developed over time. While as a process, it is dependent on circumstances.
Resilience can be increased by learning to deal with challenges and cultivating a positive, growth-oriented mindset.
"...resilience is not a trait that people either have or do not have. It involves behaviours, thoughts, and actions that can be learnt and developed in any one..."
Ann Masten as quoted by Seph Fontane Pennock, 2023a
It is more than bouncing back from adversity; it is a dynamic process of continually adjusting to challenges; in high stress environments, building resilience is a necessity, not a luxury.
It is learning to thrive in the face of adversity.
