Balancing Emotional Intelligence and Personal Boundaries
Introduction
Aiming to get the balance right between emotional intelligence and personal boundaries to create a harmonious productive work environment and to maintain your personal well-being.
Elements to be careful of
- not being a pushover (it's about understanding and managing yours and others emotions, and not letting people stomp all over you)
- going the extra distance (while this can be praiseworthy; need to be careful that do not overextend yourself; it is important to understand when to pull back; balance is the key)
- set boundaries, not walls (setting boundaries is important for emotional health they should be like a fence with a gate, not impenetrable walls; it is essential to communicate what is acceptable and what is not)
- juggle, not struggle (we often juggle multiple tasks, roles, jobs, etc; need to be careful that don't overextend yourself; be prepared to delay involvement)
- cultivate organisational culture (whatever you do aim to improve the organisation's culture, ie
"...a workplace that respects boundaries worked together to create a harmonious, productive environment..."
Brendan Brown, 2023)
- more care than scare (the compassionate and protect your space
"...love your work, respect your boundaries and occasionally fire a stare when needed..."
Brendan Brown, 2023)
- the 'me' in team (there is no 'I' in team but there is a 'me';
"...being part of a team doesn't mean sacrificing your own needs. Balanced team spirit with personal well-being. your emotional health will thank you..."
Brendan Brown, 2023)
- superhero, not superhuman (you need to understand, empathise, and navigate tricky emotional challenges; however, you need your own downtime to recharge; set your boundaries and don't be available 24/7)
- EQ echo (be effective and a role model by managing your emotions and respecting personal boundaries
- assertive approach (be prepared to speak up for yourself while maintaining respect for others)
