(Common Management Errors (111) )
Cxi) Not appreciating the need to develop appropriate work life boundaries
It can be hard setting boundaries between your work and the rest of your life. For example, setting boundaries during your work and home life, there can be the fear of the consequences like
- not being seen as dedicated to your job
- not promotion ready
- letting someone down
- difficulty saying 'no'
- a workplace culture that promotes long working hours
- technology that blurs the lines between work and home life, etc
On the other hand, long working hours and not setting boundaries can lead to
"...burnout, decreased productivity, bad relationships and poor mental health..."
Michelle Gibbings, 2023i
"...productivity declined to people who work more than 50 hours each week......working 70 hours or more a week causes the person to get the same amount of work done as people who work 50 hours......highlights the impact of employee fatigue and stress on productivity and the probability of errors, accidents, and sickness..."
John Pencavel as quoted by Michelle Gibbings, 2023i
It is been found
"...Long working hours increase the risk of heart disease by 40% (almost the same as smoking) and strokes. Also, people who worked more than 11 hours a day, are nearly 2.4 times more likely to have a major depressive episode..."
