Mindful Speech

Introduction

All of us are guilty of having said or written something that you later regretted. This can be called mindless speech, ie
"...when you are not aware of or in control of what you are communicating to others. You are speaking out of habit and automatic pilot rather than appreciating your present moment circumstances and responding with purpose and truth. Unmindful speech is the opposite of mindful speech, which is essentially think before you speak..."
Lucinda Poole, 2023

Mindful speech is defined as

"...Speaking the truth, as best as we can in any given moment, and simultaneously being aware of what you are saying and what it is like to say it..."
Hassad & Chambers as quoted by
Lucinda Poole, 2023

It involves stepping out of automatic pilot mode and becoming aware of the wandering mind; in this state you
"...daydreaming, drifting off, mentally rehearsing what to say next, with the urge to fill silences. We notice that it is difficult to simply be present and pay attention to the conversation at hand..."

Lucinda Poole, 2023
