(More on Stress cont. 1)
Two Types of Stress (eu-stress and dis-stress)
Introduction
Stress is a normal part of everyday life. However, when
"...Stress gets out of control it becomes primarily a negative predominant feature of an individual's life, and problems arise, for both individual and organisation..."
Beverley McNally, 2000
There are 2 different types of stress
i) Eu-stress
"...is pleasant and provides a sense of satisfaction and achievement. You can be busy at work, working long hours and under a great deal pressure, but still not experienced any negative effects often associated..."
Beverley McNally, 2000
ii) Dis-stress
"...is unpleasant. This can involve such things as losing a job, death of a partner, loss of a friend. This dis-tress is responsible for the negative effects on the individual and, if continuing, impacts upon their ability to function properly..."
Beverley McNally, 2000
Thus if dis-stress continues long enough, it can impair an individual's performance; if a significant number of people in a particular organisation or industry are experiencing distress at a high level, it can have negative impacts on the organisation and/or industry, affecting profitability, survivability, etc.
Many people thrive on eu-stress which can result from challenges, demanding projects, fast-paced work environment, ability to make a difference, etc.
Need to be careful of eu-stress (positive) becoming dis-stress (negative).
