2008 (iPhone 3G)
Additional capacity included GPS sensor for location-monitoring, support for 3G networks and faster performance.
The start of the App store transformed the iPhone from just a mobile device capable of accessing the Internet to a full-blown platform

2009 (iPhone 3GS)
More refinements like a better 3-megapixel camera, voice control and longer battery life plus new software that introduced features such as cut, copy, and paste actions plus support for multimedia messaging.
2010 (iPhone 4)
The 2010 model was the first major redesign since its launch, ie a thinner profile and sharper shape; featured a body made of glass with a stainless steel trim that wrapped around its edges; introduced Retina display and FaceTime video-calling; had some antenna problems.
2011 (iPhone 4S)
Introduction of Apple's digital voice assistant, Siri.
2012 (iPhone 5)
Some new design features included screen size expanded from 3.5 to 4 inches which helped it compete against Samsung et al; introduced the lightning charging port.
2013 (iPhone 5S & 5C)
5S introduced touch ID fingerprint sensor in the home button, ie represented a shift away from requiring passcodes.
The first time Apple produced 5C as a cheaper alternative to the current 5S model; the cheaper came in an array of bold colours but lacked fingerprint sensor; had a plastic body.
2014 (iPhone 6 and iPhone 6 plus)
Introduced a larger screen; this gave customers choice between 2 different screen sizes for the first time; provided faster processing and larger storage options.
2015 (iPhone 6S and iPhone 6S plus)
Some minor changes that included 3-D Touch, ie access shortcuts by pressing more deeply on the display; provided faster processor and a better 12-megapixel camera.
2016 (iPhone SE, iPhone 7 and 7S plus)
iPhone SE was a cheaper and smaller version of iPhone 6 or iPhone 6S, while iPhone 7 and 7S plus removed the headphone jack and replace it with a 3.5mm port, ie head phone jack-less smart phone. This required headphones to be connected through the lightning slot; introduced AirPods wireless ear buds.
iPhone 7S plus introduced a dual camera and Portrait Mode, ie makes the subject of an image looks sharp against a slightly blurred background; water resistance.
2017 (iPhone X, iPhone 8 and 8S plus)
iPhone 8 and 8S plus included Face ID to replace fingerprint sensor; transition to bezel-free look; introduced wireless charging; the new glass design was a departure from the aluminium-built phones previously sold.
The iPhone X included an edge-to-edge OLED screen, support for facial recognition and no home button.
2018 (iPhone XR, iPhone XS and iPhone XS Max)
iPhone XS and XS Max included a faster new processor, better water-resistance and an improved version of Portrait Mode.
While iPhone XR was cheaper than XS and offered a full-screen design but lacked OLED screen and digital camera
2019 (iPhone 11, iPhone 11 Pro and iPhone 11 Pro Max)
iPhone 11 was an upgraded iPhone XR with new dual-camera system that included an ultra-wide-angle lens and support for all night mode, a faster processor and a higher-resolution front-facing camera.
iPhone 11 Pro and iPhone 11 Pro Max included a new matte finish and an improved camera sensor plus a triple-lens camera, a wide-angle camera, ultra-wide-angle camera and telephoto lens, ie suitable for professional photographers and videographers.
2020 (iPhone 12)
Re-designed phone with a sleek, squared-off design and gone were random mental edges; higher-end OLED display plus camera improvements, G5 connectivity and compatibility with its Magsafe accessories, improved triple-lens camera system, augmented-reality capabilities, a faster processor and better battery life; Apple also produced a cheaper Mini size.
2021 (iPhone 13 amd iPhone 13 Mini)
Offered incremental improvements like brighter display, new camera modes and better camera performance plus improved battery life, ie larger battery and better power efficiency owing to an improved processor (capable of streaming videos for over 16 hours); a more-efficient display with an additional enhancement.
