Some Things Don't Change and Become Organisational Anchors

Introduction
During the change initiative, it is important to understand that some things don't change and they can provide invaluable anchors which can make the change a lot easier to handle, ie provide needed continuity..
"...large-scale change happens easier when small things that don't need to change stay the same......Basic organisational anchors help keep the company stable. Something as mundane as knowing there is a coffee pot in the lunchroom, and you can still bring your lunch and keep it in the refrigerator provide needed continuity. No matter what happens all morning, there are still lunch..."
Theresa Moulton, 2024a
Even though the change may be positive it still creates uncertainty and anxiety as unpredictable and unintended consequences can happen. Having the appropriate organisational anchors can help alleviate this challenge.
"...a key, and often unspoken, principal of organisational change is knowing what not to change..."
Theresa Moulton, 2024a
Even small dislocation can have negative impacts like daily sleep routines, commute pattern, family issues, etc. Thus the need to create tangible continuities as organisational anchors, eg same workplace surroundings, despite changes in policies, procedures, personnel, etc.
"...amazing awesome changes that are great for everybody and frighten the very people whose lives just got easier. You may need to adjust the pace...... as part of avoiding making people feel left out. even if this means freeing up team members to work on bigger things, suddenly having their small task taken away can cause fear and uncertainty..."
Moulton, Theresa, 2024a
NB Perception overshadows truth and facts.
Summary
Knowing your organisational anchors, ie which ones are changing and which ones are not, is important for the success of the change initiative
"...'little things'......play their role beneath the surface most of the time, you don't notice them until you move them......keeping them in place reduces the sense of disruption change management initiatives create. They help create a sense of stability during the change..."
Moulton, Theresa, 2024a
This allows the organisation to focus on what matters most.
