(Natural Human Instinct or Behaviour (9) cont. 10)
Summary
Understanding the human instincts helps make workplace behaviour understandable and managing people a lot easier, less stressful, more satisfying and more successful.
"...1. Human instincts provide a framework to predict the human response to change - knowing what will work and what won't
2. Classifying detector is always turned on - driven by how we feel
3. We are not wired to resist change - we screen for loss
4. The framework transforms the quality of our advice and our ability to lead change..."
Andrew O'Keeffee, 2019
Nine instincts
1. Social living (how we live, ie in hierarchical social groups)
a) Social belonging
"...humans desire strong bonds within family sized groups of around 7 people and a sense of belonging in clans of up to 150..."
Andrew O'Keeffe, 2011
Humans gain their identity in small groups of around 7 people, ie between 5 and 9 members; similar but not identical to a family model.
Small teams suffer from a sense of isolation; conversely, large teams
- lack a sense of connection so that factions or cliques could develop
- are too large for somebody to manage effectively, ie not able to spend the necessary time with each person.
b) Hierarchy and status
"...humans seek superiority or security in hierarchical systems. We seek status symbols, recognition and elevation within the hierarchy..."
Andrew O'Keeffe, 2011
2. Thinking and feeling (how we think and feel, ie
"...How we process information, how we make decisions and, in an evolutionary sense, how we make ourselves attractive..."
Andrew O'Keeffe, 2011)
a) Emotions before reasons
"...humans trust their emotional instincts above all else and use emotions as their first screen for all information received. We hear negative news first and loudest..."
Andrew O'Keeffe, 2011
b) First impressions to classify
"...humans quickly classify people, situations and experiences into categories (good or bad, in or out) based on first impressions and gut feelings rather than engaging in time-consuming analysis..."
Andrew O'Keeffe, 2011
c) Loss aversion
"...humans seek to avoid loss and risky situations but fight frantically when feeling threatened. We explore and are curious about the world around us when we feel safe..."
Andrew O'Keeffe, 20116.
d) Gossip
"...humans seek and share information. We share information with others we like and use it to build alliances. We love to tell and hear stories..."
Andrew O'Keeffe, 2011
e) Empathy and mind reading
"...humans use empathy and mind reading to build relationships, be friendly and gather information..."
Andrew O'Keeffe, 2011
f) Confidence before realism
"...human to radiate confidence to move forward in the world, often denying what is realistic. We allow confidence to conquer realism to get what we want..."
Andrew O'Keeffe, 2011
g) Contest and display
"...Humans seek to impress others and to demonstrate their worth as a means to gaining advantage. We spend inordinate amounts of time and energy making ourselves look good in various ways..."
Andrew O'Keeffe, 2011
