Common Management Error (123)

Cxxiii) too much jargon spoken (
most professions develop jargon that is only understood by other people in the same professional group. This makes it hard for outsiders to understand. It is important to speak the language of the stakeholders so that they can understand it easier. For example, one client mentioned that their main challenge was 'total process approach'. On deeper analysis, this was their name for communications. So when we spoke of communications, we use their phrase, ie total process approach.
Need to be careful of using and developing jargon as it can confuse stakeholders and negatively impact the change process, etc; need to use user-friendly language. Some examples
- psychological safety the fancy name given an environment where people could speak freely and openly without fear of reprisal
- agile is the upmarket named for 'trial and error' or 'experimentation'
- outsourcing is the new name for contracting
