Motivation (positive reinforcement at work cont.)

Punishment
Don't confuse positive and negative reinforcement with punishment.
"...punishment occurs when an aversive, or undesirable, stimulus (eg extra work hours, loss of benefits) is used with the goal of reducing and undesirable outcome (eg chronic lateness). An aversive stimulus that is and it represents a positive form of punishment; whereas, undesirable inverse is removed percent to negative form of punishment..."
Heather S. Lonczak, 2019

Punishment is generally not regarded the best approach because
"...It is often perceived as punitive and disparaging; and because punishing someone for an undesirable behaviour does not involve adding a desirable behaviour to take its place..."
Heather S. Lonczak, 2019

Sometimes punishment
"...had an immediate impact on behaviour, such results are generally short-lived..."
A. Naik as quoted by Heather S. Lonczak, 2019
