Some Advice from 3 Successful Australian Businessman
Three Australian billionaires summarise the key to their success, eg Jack Cowin (Hungry Jacks), Gerry Harvey (Harvey Norman) & John van Lieshout (Super A-mart)
i) be constantly thinking about what's coming next (ask these type of questions:
- What market share will you have in 10 years time?
- Who will be your opposition in 10 years time?
- How will your goods and services be sold in 10 years time?
- How will trends, such as technology, impact you?, etc)
ii) offer meaningful profit share to staff, especially management (by doing this they will act like owners, ie find ways to increase revenue, reduce costs, maximise returns from investments, etc
"...people do good work if they have a stake in what they're doing..."
John van Lieshout as quoted by James Thomson, 2023a)
iii) understanding the big picture while not forgetting the detail (this means being part astronomer - looking at the big picture - and part microbiologist - understanding the detail
"...very often, people fail because they lose sight of the big picture, or vice versa, they get so caught up in the pine needles of the detail that they lose sight of the big picture. The successful entrepreneur needs to do both..."
James Cowin as quoted by James Thomson, 2023a)
iv) own rather than rent property (paying rent is a waste of money; better to pay interest on the mortgage of an asset that is growing, ie power of compounding interest)
v) risk takers ( they are willing to take calculated risks
"...there is usually a moment when they risk everything..."
James Thomson, 2023a)
vi) focus on things you understand (stay away things you don't understand)
