Self-confidence v Self-esteem v Self-belief v Self-efficacy
Introduction
"... Self-esteem is a fairly stable trait that doesn't change much in an individual.....Generally defined as our belief in our innate value, worth, and how deserving we are for love, happiness, success, and other good things in life. By contrast, self-confidence does not take into consideration any beliefs about worthiness or overall value; rather, it focuses on the ability in succeeding and beliefs about one's likelihood of succeeding......self-esteem is about the success you feel you deserve, while self-confidence in the success you feel you are capable of achieving..."
Courtney E Ackerman, 2018a
"...self-belief......is a realistic optimistic evaluation of yourself and your abilities a sense of trust and confidence in yourself..."
Courtney E Ackerman, 2018a
Self-belief is part of self-confidence, ie you must have some self-belief to be self-confidence, however, self-belief does not guarantee self-confidence.
"...along with characterising your beliefs about yourself, self-confidence is a trait that permeates your thoughts, feelings and actions..."
Courtney E Ackerman, 2018a
Judgements about people's self-confidence is based on their words and actions, ie performance and behaviours.
Self-efficacy is based on the belief that you can influence events of your life, ie high self-efficacy means that you feel you are in control and can influence events of your life.
"...Self-efficacy is focused on current beliefs about the future; while self-confidence is also concerned with beliefs about the future, there is definitely a link to the past - after all, our self-confidence is built on past experiences..."
Courtney E Ackerman, 2018a
Regard building of self-confidence as a journey:
"...1. Preparing for your journey
a. Take an inventory of what you have already achieved.
b. Think about your strengths and weaknesses (especially your strengths)
c. Think about your goals and values
d. Practise ceasing negative self-talk in its tracks and replacing it with positive thinking
e. Commit to the journey of self-confidence!
2. Setting out
a. Identify and enhance the knowledge and skills you need to succeed
b. Focus on the basics - don't get bogged down in details or reaching for perfection

d. Keep working on your positive thinking and self-talk.

NB The journey will have many twists and turns; however, keep going.
Some tips for building self-confidence skills, ie boosting your belief in yourself, ie self-belief
- Have some successes and build on them (irrespective of how small successes are, build on them)
- Recognise and reframe negative thoughts (with negative thoughts, think about how you can rephrase, reframe, and adapt to a more positive/neutral thought, eg
"...if you kept yourself thinking, 'such a failure! You cannot do anything right' try to replace it with a more forgiving phrase like, 'everyone makes mistakes sometimes. I bet I can do better next time..."
Courtney E Ackerman, 2018a)
- Preparation (be thorough in your background research to lay a solid foundation for success and building self-confidence)
- Challenge yourself (open yourself up to new experiences and allow yourself to be challenged and succeed
"...it's a classic catch-22: your low self-confidence encourages you to avoid doing the exact things that would help you build up your self-confidence. If uninterrupted, this can lead to an ever-deepening spiral of low self-confidence..."
Courtney E Ackerman, 2018a)
- Give yourself the self-care you need (this involves taking
"...care of your body, mind and soul by eating healthily, exercising, giving yourself a break, and engaging in whatever other self-care you need to feel good......engage self care to show yourself how valuable you are, and you will feel more confident in your abilities and motivated to prove that you are right about yourself..."
Courtney E Ackerman, 2018a
- Practice accepting failure (we all experience failure; need to handle it in a positive light, ie what are the 'learnings'
"...practising failure can be just as important as practising success..."
Courtney E Ackerman, 2018a)
- Hypnosis and Hypnotherapy (these therapies focus on your subconscious and can be used to inject a dose of positivity)
- Guided meditation (for more details, see elsewhere in the Knowledge Base)
