Organisational Change Management Volume 2

Benefits of Short-term Wins

. Provides evidence that the sacrifices are worthwhile, ie benefits outweigh the costs

. Positive feedback builds morale and motivation

. Gives the guiding coalition data on the viability of change, and help fine-tune the processes

. Undermines cynics and doubters

. Keeps hierarchy on side, eg Boards

. Short-term rewards or quick successes build momentum, ie

"...reassure the believers, convince the doubters, and confound the critics..."

William Bridges, 1991

. Can be used as a testing ground for new ways of managing, measuring and organising for results that provide a foundation for further improvements

Momentum

Even if a strong enough effort is made at the beginning to plan and support the change initiative, momentum needs to be maintained throughout the whole change process:

"...A successful early drive is rarely sufficient to overcome internal resistance at peoples long for the old ways......every change experiences internal resistances or unforeseen factors which threaten to derail its progress. Without visible leadership, clear communications and focussed energy to address the issues, overcome resistances, maintain momentum or re-energise those experiencing and implementing the elements of change, the likelihood of failure is high even if initially well-planned and implemented..."

Beaudan as quoted by Taryn Haynes-Smart, 2010
