Six Reasons Why Mentoring is Important
Introduction
Mentoring is a good way of improving the performance of your people and your organisation.
Reasons
i) attract top talent (talented staff want to learn from the best in their respective fields)
ii) increase employee retention rate (helps staff achieve their needs professionally and personally; can keep them engaged and motivated; it can have a positive impact on both mentors and mentees, thus encouraging them to stay with the organisation)
iii) improve company culture (can encourage interaction between different areas of the organisation, improving communications, understanding, engagement and reducing conflict within the organisation)
iv) efficient communications (encourages people to share ideas to improve their organisation, including lessons learnt; builds self-confidence in staff to approach management, ie encourages everyone to have a voice in their organisation's decision-making process)
v) creation of future internal leaders (helps potential leaders have a clear understanding of the organisation's vision and mission and its goals and objectives; reduces the cost of hiring externally, including cost of training new hires)
vi) career and personal development (it is enhanced by a mentoring program; these mentors and mentees usually find their work more interesting and challenging, resulting in better performance)
