(Psychological Safety cont. 1)

Interactions build a culture

"...culture is a complicated blend of values, assumptions, perceptions, attitudes, beliefs, behaviours, and customs. But essentially, is just interaction. Each seemingly discrete interaction both shapes you and is shaped by you. As these interactions build up...... over time, a culture forms..."
LeadFactor, 2022a

In every culture there are unwritten, hidden rules, ie default culture, which you need to understand, ie
"...you learn that there are people who speak freely with and other people you tiptoe around. There are things that can be said, and things that can't. There are groups you know you're welcome to join, and cliques that seem to require some sort of secret password before they'll even consider letting you in..."

LeadFactor, 2022a

As most default cultures are not inclusive or innovative, they don't improve performance; extreme cases have contagious toxicity.
If you want to progress from the default culture, you need to communicate and model the new expectations; this includes the little things such as:

- How do you greet each other?
- How do you interact during your working day?
- What is your immediate response to feedback, disagreements and concerns?
- How are mistakes handled?
- Is brainstorming productive
?

NB Use the foundation of psychological safety as a basis for moving beyond default culture; it will allow cultural changes to stick, spread, stay, etc.
