Common Change Management Errors cont.

Cxxxxxx) Not appreciating that people are the key to successful change.

In change management, people are consistently cited as the most critical factor for success.

Some reasons for this:

1. People Drive Adoption

  • A change initiative can have the best strategy, technology and resources, but if the people affected don’t adopt new behaviours, the change fails.
  • Adoption depends on understanding, engagement and willingness — all human factors.

Example: Implementing a new digital platform only succeeds if staff actually use it correctly.

2. People Make Decisions and Solve Problems

  • Change often encounters unexpected challenges. People are the ones who interpret, adapt and problem-solve in real time.
  • Engaged employees can find creative solutions that rigid processes or systems alone cannot.

3. People Influence Others

  • People, like leaders, managers and informal influencers, etc shape perceptions, attitudes and culture.
  • Peer influence is powerful: if key individuals resist, it can derail adoption; if they champion it, it accelerates acceptance.

4. People Provide Feedback and Insights

  • Stakeholder input reveals what works, what doesn’t and where support is needed.
  • Ignoring human input often results in solutions that are impractical or poorly received.

5. Change Is Emotional

  • People’s feelings about change, such as fear, uncertainty, excitement, pride, etc drive engagement more than logic alone.
  • Addressing emotions is essential; without it, even well-designed changes can fail.

6. People Sustain Change

  • Systems, processes, and tools can be implemented, but only people can embed new behaviours into the culture.
  • Ongoing reinforcement, recognition and practice keep the change alive.

Key Insight

“Change is 80% people and 20% process.”

Successful change happens when organisations align strategy, structure and systems with people’s needs, motivations, and capabilities.
