More on Coachability (a framework)

Awareness and willingness create 4 performance zones:

(source: LeaderFactor, 2025)

Comments on each performance zone

  1. Failing (low awareness and low willingness)

People in this zone are usually unaware of their shortcomings.

In order to remedy the performance, move quickly by presenting factual evidence and setting up future performance expectations which will be continually reviewed for decision-making about their future.

Summary: confront and decide.

  1. Progressing (low awareness and high willingness)

People in this zone are usually eager to grow but don't know how to do it.

Need to guide their motivation by

- modelling desired behaviour continually

- continue reviewing recent performance

- encourage frequent reflection, ie feedback loops, etc.

Summary: mirror and model

  1. Plateauing (high awareness and low willingness)

Despite understanding their impact, they are not willing to change.

People in this zone need to

- have ownership and emotional re-engagement

- reignite drive

- set schedules for behavioural shifts and increased accountability

Summary: motivate and contract

  1. Accelerating (high willingness and high awareness)

People in this zone take initiatives, seek feedback and respond appropriately.

They need to be

- encouraged to stretch their capabilities

- use as a coach for others

-- publicly recognised and rewarded for their performances and achievements

Summary: challenge and champion
