Some Ways to Make Wise Decisions (professional and personal)
Introduction
The following practices can build the discipline of making wise choices:
- Develop a career compass (continuously review your long-term goals so you can evaluate opportunities against them.)
- Track your capacity (maintain a realistic understanding of your workload, energy levels, time management, resources, etc; regularly monitor and evaluate to prevent over-commitment.)
- Seek mentors and sponsors (evaluate potential opportunities with trusted advisers who can provide alternative perspectives and challenge your point of view so that you make wise choices)
- Practise the language of ‘no’ (reframe and rehearse your response so that is positive and tactful)
- Reframe success (measure success by the quality and impact of the opportunities taken, not by quantity.)
NB
“…Professionals who decline opportunities strategically are not closing doors. They are choosing which doors to walk through with intention…”
