Some Key Factors Impacting Effective Change Management

How to Build Commitment (buy-in)

The basis for this is

"...to properly diagnose and communicate the context of change and provide the right environment……both cognitively and emotionally...... implementing change without the necessary commitment of employees is more difficult and also more likely to fail...."

Vakola et al, as quoted by Taryn Haynes-Smart, 2010

The more people who are committed to the change initiative, the greater the likelihood of success; need to develop strategies to handle challenges that reduce the level of commitment.

"...When an individual feels cognitively and emotionally prepared, they are more inclined to accept, and adopt the change plan..."

Judge et al as quoted by Taryn Haynes-Smart, 2010

It is important to lay the foundation for a change so that the organisation is ready, ie it is essential for successful change implementation.

Having a positive mindset to change so that impacted stakeholders willingly participate is essential for the change to be successful; this attitude has a wider impact on overall job satisfaction, organisational commitment, morale, productivity, absenteeism, staff turnover, etc

Furthermore,

"...a trust-based approach to implementing change has the potential to speed up the process of change, and it also decreases resistance to change......a strong positive relationship exists between managerial communication, employee participation and supervisory trust as well as between supervisory trust and openness to organisational change. Where employees trust supervisors, they have a greater sense of belonging, membership and identification with the organisation, increased feelings of job importance and are also less anxious and more positive about change......communication is closely associated with trustworthiness and openness to change. When organisations are seen as trustworthy and communication is perceived as accurate and forthcoming......employees receiving useful, sufficient task information showed an increased understanding of goals, vision, norms and values......receipt of sufficient career communication enables employees to adapt and develop quicker..."

Erturk as quoted by Taryn Haynes-Smart, 2010

The relationship between employee and supervisor is pivotal.
