Framework 192 ADDIE framework
Introduction
ADDIE is based upon behaviourism, constructivism, social learning and cognitivism; it is a instructional system design.
It has 5 phases:
- analysis
- design
- development
- implementation
- evaluation
(see diagram below)

Phases of ADDIE
i) Analysis(this phase
"...clarifies instructional problems and objectives, and identifies the learning environment and learners’ existing knowledge and skills..."
Wikipedia, 2024
Answer the following questions as part of the needs analysis to develop an action plan:
"...- Who are the learners and what are their characteristics?
- What is the desired new behaviour?
- What types of learning constraints exist?
- What are the delivery options?
- What are the pedagogical considerations?
- What adult learning theory considerations apply?
- What is a timeline for project completion?..."
Wikipedia. 2024)
ii) design phase(this involves dealing with
"...Learning objectives, assessment instruments, exercises, content, subject matter analysis, lesson planning and media selection. The design phase should be systematic and specific. Systematic means using logical, orderly method that identifies, develops, and evaluates a set of planned strategies for attaining project goals...... involves writing a design document/design proposal concept and structured notes to a final development..."
Wikipedia, 2024)
iii) development phase (involves creating and assembling content based on the design phase; for example, if e-learning is involved, programs are developed to integrate technologies, etc; conduct a pilot test; based on feedback, modify as required)
iv) implementation phase(involves training and testing; continue to monitor and evaluate performance and make the appropriate adjustments, as required)
v) evaluation phase(it involvesformative and summative elements; formative are ongoing and summative elements are conducted at the end of the project)
There are variations of this framework, like where P is the planning phase that develops project goals, project objectives, budgets and schedules, and M is the maintenance phase with continuous improvement.
