Framework 187          The Sixpack Model

Introduction
The essential ingredients for a successful organisational change.
"...- create the change imperative or sense of urgency
     - provide agreed strategic leadership
     - create a sense of shared direction - both about the what and how
     - implement the changes
     - score some early victories
     - sustain the gains of change culture..."

Michael Jarrett, 2003
This can help you understand the change process, ie this framework of change
"...is dynamic, interactive flow of key elements that are driven by context and time-dependent factors. It is supplemented internally by self-organising sub-systems and the intentionality of the leadership. But the outcome is unpredictable..."
Michael Jarrett, 2003
More on essential ingredients:
- create the change imperative (if there is a sense of urgency, eg to survive, you have to change, people are more likely to change rather than stay in the status quo or their zone of comfort)
- provide agreed strategic leadership
(it is essential that senior management is aligned with change and form the appropriate strategic coalition)
- create a sense of shared direction
(continually effectively communicate about both the 'what' and 'how')
- implement the changes
(initially conduct a pilot to test the boundary conditions and gain a quick win; start small and focused so that lessons can be learnt, ie what works and doesn't work; modify the change process based on the lessons learnt is a way of lowering the risk)
  - score some early victories
(this will help build momentum and interest in the change; reward and recognise the right behaviours like team performance rather than individual performance)
  - sustain the gains of culture change
(cultivate and embed the new changes so that a renewed equilibrium of incremental and fine tuning is fostered.

Summary
The above ingredients are constantly interacting.
Remember: the area you have the most control over is yourself.
"...the ability to manage the only real factor under your control, yourself..."
Michael Jarrett, 2003
